Birdman – Review

Critically acclaimed & highly anticipated to be among the best, Birdman is a Technical Wonder by Day and a Psychological Eye-Opener by Night.

Birdman, The kind of bird that takes a metaphorical shit on your head.

The kind of bird that takes a metaphorical shit on your head.

A washed up actor (Michael Keaton), who once played an iconic superhero, battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career and himself in the days leading up to the opening of a Broadway play.
(I really can’t say much about the plot without revealing any spoilers. So this will have to do.)

Yeap, not creepy at all.

Yeap, not creepy at all.

Highly rated and it has every reason to be. The plot may simple enough as it’s basically about a one hit wonder who has had enough of being a former somebody and wishes to reclaim the fame he once had. We’re then introduced to the complexities of both his life and his mind which involves not only those around him but the one within him, Birdman. Besides the well written script and casting choices, the cinematography is a massive addition to the creative depth of Birdman. By manipulating and editing the camerawork, the movie is presented in the form of a long take (No splits between scenes, just one camera that follows everyone. You’d see what I mean.).

This is just one of the many alternate Birdman posters that I absolutely love. Check them all out if you've the time.

Dark Comedies & Artsy Dramas aren’t exactly enjoyed by your average mainstream viewer due to the slow pace & emotional depth of these genres. Birdman is an Artsy Dark Comedy, so yeah, probably won’t be enjoyed by most in Malaysia due to the rather subtle humour of Birdman and the restricted creative sensitivity of our society. On a personal note, it’s a 7 purely because I love artsy films and dark comedies but it’s a little too draggy at times and to be honest, I’d much rather prefer a light-hearted laugh out loud comedy at the moment. Timing is everything and January is far from the right time.

Have you ever been so deep in thought, you started floating? He has.

Wedding Ringer – Review

Nearly the end of January 2015 and a movie that everyone could watch – well if you’re 18 and above. Also gives a slight hint on how a The Bachelor’s party should be.

BVCT0357 The Wedding Ringer KeyArt-3-01

No, this isn’t a Hang Over movie

When the wedding bell is just around the corner the main question on man’s mind would be who is gonna be your best man. Now, it’s either they have to many friends or non. Well Doug Harris(Josh Gad) has non and this how Jimmy Callaghan(Kevin Hart) comes into the picture. Jimmy offers best man service to those who are lack of him and according to him, this business is a gold mine.
However this time, Doug brought to Jimmy an impossible mission. Jimmy is to prepare not one, not two but 7 best men. What makes it more impossible is that Jimmy only has 10 days to prepare all of this. Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting plays Gretchen Palmer the over excited brides to be and wants everything to be perfect which reminds us alot of Kate Hudson.

A perfect wedding with the perfect best men?

First of all, it’s not your typical wedding movie. It’s surely a breath of fresh air and we totally love it. The idea of a best men service is really unheard of and they really manage to pull it off. Director, Jeremy Garelick has it signature written all over it. The jokes are fresh and the scenes are mostly misleading like The Break-Up but ending is solid.

However, we did feel that movie a little focus on Doug’s character and at certain part the scene just left hanging. Kevin’s character is very solid thou and spot on. It doesn’t feel like he is trying to hard Adam Sandler in Growns Up and Growns Up 2.  Adam Sandler should definitely learn a thing or two from Kevin Hart.
It’s not the joke that you have to watch but funny scenes like the Gretchen’s grandmother being set on fire.

For the TEAMMM!!!!!!

Some might not agree with our view of the movie but we feel that it deserve it. It’s highly entertaining with some problem that few can relate. By far one of Kevin Hart’s best movie beside Soul Plane.

Release date: 29th January 2015

After the successful production of Maleficent, Disney will be remaking Beauty And The Beast with Emma Watson as Belle. The new live action fantasy movie will be directed by Bill Condon, director for Beyonce’s Dreamgirl. Emma Watson announce the news on her new role via Facebook and she is ecstatic with it.
Much earlier the rumors was that  Guillermo del Toro will be producing it but how ever the idea was scraped. Also Kristen Stewart was considered for the role of Belle but Disney decided to give it to the Harry Potter sweetheart.

Fanstastic Four Official Trailer

The trailer of the reboot Marvel’s Fantastic Four came out yesterday and it’s totally different from the previous Tim Story version. Josh Trank is really bringing it home with this even thou it does look like a Christopher Nolan movie.

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “JUPITER ASCENDING,” an original science fiction action adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.  Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks.  Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “JUPITER ASCENDING” is written and directed by the Wachowskis.  Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski.  Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”) and Mila Kunis (“Oz the Great and Powerful”) lead an international cast that also includes Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy), Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”), Douglas Booth (“LOL”), Tuppence Middleton (TV’s “The Lady Vanishes”), Doona Bae (“Cloud Atlas”), James D’Arcy (“Hitchcock”) and Tim Pigott-Smith (“Alice in Wonderland”).

Behind the scenes, “JUPITER ASCENDING” reunites the Wachowskis with their longstanding collaborators, who most recently worked with them on “Cloud Atlas.”  They include Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”); production designer Hugh Bateup; editor Alexander Berner; costume designer Kym Barrett; and hair and makeup designer Jeremy Woodhead.  The music is composed by Oscar® winner Michael Giacchino (“Up”).

“JUPITER ASCENDING” will showcase the kind of cutting-edge visual effects that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowskis’ films.  Dan Glass (“Batman Begins,” “Cloud Atlas”) is the film’s visual effects supervisor, a post he has occupied for the Wachowskis since “The Matrix” Trilogy.  Additionally, John Gaeta, the visual effects Oscar® winner behind “The Matrix,” is contributing to the visual effects design.

Into The Woods – Review

Even if musicals aren’t exactly your cup of tea, Disney’s Into The Woods will keep you in your seat with it’s witty humour peppered throughout this wildly entertaining adaptation.

OPENS TODAY (15/1/2015)

The Woods is a magical place but not as magical as Malaysian public restrooms.

The Woods is a magical place but not as magical as Malaysian public restrooms.

Adapted to film from the Broadway musical of the same name, Into The Woods maintains much of it’s core as an entertaining & somewhat educational story. Intertwining a number of the ever-popular Grimm fairy tales into one, Into The Woods emphasizes on the misconceptions of each fairy tale character as they were all previously considered to be relatively flawless. Exciting throughout the 1st & 2nd acts of the movie, it started to feel a little lethargic in the 3rd act. Nonetheless, definitely worth a watch for both adults & the kids.

Johnny Depp is the Big Bad.. Pedo.. Wolf, I mean Wolf.

Johnny Depp is the Big Bad.. Pedo.. Wolf, I mean Wolf.

Into The Woods starts off with a rather catchy song that introduces the main characters in their current predicaments & why they’re all going into “The Woods”. The story that ties all of them together is about the Baker (James Corden) & his wife (Emily Blunt) who are unable to conceive a child due to a hereditary curse. Fortunately, a glimmer of hope appears in the form of a Witch (Meryl Streep) who can remove the curse as long as they bring her a couple of items from The Woods(White Cow -Jack & The Beanstalk, Red Hood -Red Riding Hood, Golden Shoe -Cinderella, Yellow Hair -Rapunzel). Along the way, he meets all the other characters trying to solve their own issues which includes the goody two shoes Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), unfairly treated Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), thief with a heart of gold Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) and Stockholm syndrome Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)

A world where hot women gets married with round men because of their heart.

A world where hot women gets married with round men because of their heart.

A modern take on these classic stories allows for modern moral values. Ranging from indecisiveness (Cinderella wants to be a princess but not really but she does but not really but maybe but maybe not but alright, princess it is but wait, no..) to child sex offenders ( As charmingly taught in the phrase “Nice isn’t always Good” by the annoying Red Riding Hood), especially important for the younger generation.

Both the Princes were hilarious, especially Prince Charming (Chris Pine) who is both good & pardon my language, a douche bag. Then we have the annoying Red Riding Hood, I don’t condone violence of any sort but Red Riding Hood makes me feel otherwise. James Corden & Emily Blunt steal the show for me even if most would be raving about Meryl Streep, which don’t get me wrong, it was good; just that it’s expected to be good so hardly any sort of surprise performance there.

Music is good but what did you expect? It’s a musical, of course it’s good.

The best scene in the entire movie, The Princes Song.

The best scene in the entire movie,
The Princes’ Song.

Overall, fun for all ages. Educational & Entertaining. The month of January in the cinema industry is usually known for it’s, let’s be blunt, rubbish movies *cough* Taken 3 *cough* but I am glad to say that this is an exception. Highly Recommended that you take your siblings, significant others, kids, relatives, young, old & watch it as there won’t be many like it for a month or two.
