Daily Bites (20/03/17) – More Live-Action Disney Movies, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower and Matrix Prequel

Not much has come up today so we’ll be talking more about Disney’s push towards Live-Action remakes of classic Disney animations, the latest release of The Dark Tower poster, what’s going on with the Matrix reboot rumours and when Kingsman 2 will finally be released!

Disney is going Live-Action

In recent years, Walt Disney Studios has taken to adapting its library of animated classics to live-action. Some are new takes on well-known stories, like Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland, while others have been more strict adaptations, such as Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and the recently released Beauty and the Beast. Thanks to the success of many of these films, both with critics and fans as well as at the box office, Disney has a whole host of other live-action re-imaginings in the works, including Niki Caro’s Mulan, Jon Favreau’s The Lion King, and Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin.

“Guy became interested in doing a Disney movie and we talked a lot about it. When we talked about Aladdin, he said, ‘My stories are really about street hustlers. That’s what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good.’ Guy’s got his own version of that story in his life. But he wanted to honor and respect the Disney of it all. We never want to feel like we have a playbook to these things because we worry it’ll make us creatively complacent. The idea of a highly energized Guy Ritchie Disney musical felt like, Oh, we haven’t done that before.”

“Mulan is clearly an empowered-female story but we can also do something new in this reimagining, make it a little more muscular, stronger, with touch of Ridley Scott.”
– Sean Bailey, President of Motion Picture Production at Walt Disney Studios (Interview with Vulture)

News of the start of production of The Lion King is the latest in the exciting slate of news coming out about the production. Perhaps the biggest announcement to date is the casting of James Earl Jones, who will reprise his role as the voice of Mufasa. The Darth Vader voice actor will be accompanied by one of the latest additions to the Star Wars family – Donald Glover – who will provide the voice of the adult Simba. Glover is currently in production on the untitled young Han Solo anthology Star Wars film, playing the young Lando Calrissian to fellow scoundrel Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). Disney has also hired screenwriter Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) to pen The Lion King script.

Stephen King reveals the leaked Dark Tower movie poster is, in fact, the official movie poster

King revealed the poster on Twitter, which was accompanied by the message: “Pilgrim, there are other worlds than these. Come with us on the adventure.”

Nikolaj Arcel is directing The Dark Tower, which won’t be a straight adaptation of King’s beloved series of books. The film, which stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as Walter Padick, will instead serve as more a sequel than a retelling of the author’s original work.

The Dark Tower opens in theaters on July 28, 2017.

Matrix 4 will be a prequel which focuses on a young Morpheus

It is known that Fantastic Four, Creed and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan is wanted for the movie. Now it’s being reported that he is specifically wanted as Young Morpheus.

Zak Penn, who helped write the first Avengers movie, is penning the initial script for The Matrix 4, whatever it turns out to be. He was the first from the team to step forward and talk about the reboot of the franchise. Or rather, it’s a continuation of what is already in place. He had this to say about why they’re not messing around with the original classic, with Neo still existing inside this world.

“All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT The Matrix. People who know ‘Animatrix’ and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words reboot and remake were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of The Matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

BMD’s sources say this is true. The Matrix reboot will follow its own path. And the studio is indeed setting up a Matrix writers’ room that will be used to create not just one but a whole lot of sci-fi adventures centered within the realm of what has already been created. While the Young Morpheus movie is not confirmed as the first movie to roll out of this new franchise factory, it is said to be a concept favored by Warner Bros.

Kingsman 2 Release Date Is Pushed Forward

Due to Kingsman being a surprise hit of 2015, most movie fans were extremely excited when they heard director, Matthew Vaughan announce that he would be releasing the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle in June 2017. Becoming one of 2017’s highly anticipated movies, fans were distraught when they heard that the film was pushed back from its original June release to early October, but now that date has been changed once more.

According to Exhibitor Relations, the second Kingsman movie has moved up one week from its October 6th date to now come out on September 29, 2017. With the change being so small, it should not make any difference on the post-production period. Leading to the understanding that this date change was done to avoid competing with another highly anticipated movie, Denis Villenueve’s Blade Runner 2049.
