If you’re food lover, well this is the movie that must not be missed. The fusion between traditional Indian food and classy French food just makes want to take a bite of the screen. Featuring Helen Mirren as the high standard restaurant operator and Bollywood’s most respected actor; Om Puri as hard headed father.
It all started with Juhi Chawla playing as Mama to Kadam family explaining the affair of cooking to Hassan. Hassan character is played by Manish Dayal.
After an attack at the Kadam’s restaurant in Mumbai which Mama died in, the family decides to move on by migrating to another country. After a disappointing stay in the UK, Papa – the head of the Kadam family decides to move Europe in hope of an opportunity to start fresh.
The family later lands in a small village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France where Papa begins to saw the future family there. They found a run-down restaurant and bought over it. Across of their new restaurant is Le Saule Pleureur. A Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory.
Madame Mallory never liked the Kadam’s and always looks down on them. On the opening night of the Kadam’s restaurant, Madame Mallory sabotage them by purchasing all of the fish at the market. That didn’t lower their spirit, instead just made them even eager to beat the egoist Madame Mallory.
Day by the day the restaurant stars getting better and Madame Mallory uses every means necessary to stop them but it was all useless. However one night, it all got a little out of hand in which Hassan got injured. Instead of getting mad, Hassan only requested to cook her an omelet to prove of his worth and ofcourse he won her with his cooking. Madame Mallory instantly was determine to educate the young chef about another level of culinary.
Remarks: Glad to see more and more of these Hollywood and Bollywood clashes which works. However, personally we felt that book is better than the movie. Maybe it’s because the fact that the director didn’t focus on love between Hassan and Marguerite more.
However kudos to director Lasse Hallstrom who still makes great movie that could make you tear up. One thing for sure, that this movie will make you start loving your mum’s cooking the most and love your father even more.
